Who we are
Our staff, volunteers, and donors share a common goal: to support the open source scientific computing tools and communities that make scientific discoveries and innovation possible.
|
Our Mission Our mission is to promote open practices in research, data, and scientific computing by serving as a fiscal sponsor for open source projects and organizing community-driven educational programs. |
Our Vision NumFOCUS envisions an inclusive scientific and research community that utilizes actively supported open source software to make impactful discoveries for a better world. |
Why Open Source Science Matters
Scientific software is a fundamental component of modern research and engineering. Open source software — meaning software that anyone may use, inspect, modify, and redistribute — is increasingly the standard in academic research because it promotes accessibility and reproducibility. It also provides significant benefits for industry, allowing companies to build on a shared pool of public R&D. NumFOCUS provides a stable, independent, and professional home for the open source projects powering contemporary scientific inquiry and business processes.
NumFOCUS supports open source science in three critical areas:
Projects
At the core of our work is supporting the teams behind our Sponsored and Affiliated scientific computing projects, providing critical infrastructure, financial administration, legal support, and much more to sustain the tools that are innovating scientific research.
Community
Scientific research doesn’t happen without a community of maintainers, contributors, researchers, industry users, and more rallying around the tools needed to make vital advancements. At NumFOCUS, we advance open science by championing inclusion and growing the contributors who actively maintain our open source scientific computing projects.
Education
We can’t grow if we don’t learn, right? We focus on educational opportunities through our global conference schedule and meet-up network, where anyone in the open source community can come together to learn from each other, gain new ideas, and build connections that drive us to grow.
Ways to Support NumFOCUS:
Donating, volunteering, contributing code, getting some new swag… There are lots of ways to support us and our projects.
